Internet Browser Introduced on Applied Data Systems Graphics Client

Century Software Embedded Technologies introduces Internet browser and multimedia applications on StrongARM based flatpanel embedded Linux platform

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - August 11, 2000 - Century Software Embedded Technologies, a leading developer of applications technologies for embedded Linux, today announced the port of its ViewML Internet Browser and core multimedia technologies to the Applied Data Systems Graphics Client platform. Applied Data Systems (ADS), a leading developer of application-ready embedded systems, manufactures the Graphics Client, a popular StrongARM SA-1110 based single board computer system, which features a large flatpanel color display for use in embedded applications. These technologies will be shown at next week's Linux Expo Show in ADS's booth #1214.

"The availability of Century Software's high-quality embedded web browser and multimedia solutions allows the ADS Graphics Client to be used in an increasing number of embedded Linux applications, including those requiring audio and video output, as well as server-based interactive applications," said Robert Olsen, President and CEO of Applied Data Systems. Using the large 640 x 480 full color display and touchpanel, OEMs can now offer connectivity with web-based services and interaction with other systems. MPEG-1 video and MP3 audio data can be streamed from the Internet, played from local flash RAM, and controlled in a programmed manner using Century Software's embedded multimedia technologies.

The ViewML Browser is a small memory footprint, high-quality web browser targeting the needs of the rapidly growing embedded Linux market. ViewML provides HTML v3.2 display in only 800k ROM and 2Mb RAM, and is the first open source, royalty free web browser specifically targeted towards the embedded Linux market. "We're very pleased to be making available our browser and multimedia technologies on the ADS platform, since the Graphics Client is ideally situated to capitalize on the rapidly growing demand for lower-cost, high-quality single board embedded systems requiring easily readable flatpanel displays," said Gregory Haerr, CEO of Century Software.

Century Software's new core multimedia audio and video technologies include a multi-threaded MP3 player, optionally with a user interface using the Nano-X embedded graphical windowing system and the Fast Light Tool Kit applications framework. Playlists and shuffling, as well as streaming audio from the flash file system or Internet are supported, as well as multiple bitrates and volume adjustments. An MPEG-1 video player, with support for connectivity via TCP/IP for video source as well as from the local file system, is also available. Video image resizing to any width and height is supported. The Graphics Client supports video display in 8 and 16 bits per pixel.

Together, the ADS Graphics Client and Century Software's Internet and multimedia technologies allow an OEM or systems integrator quickly produce an application requiring web connectivity or audio/video on Linux.
